Fishing Trip/Hike
Raven Rock State Park, NC
July 12-14, 2002

This trip was a combination backpacking and fishing trip, although the backpacking turned out to be more successful than the fishing. Due to the fact that the park requires campers to be in the park an hour before sunset, we were not able to go all the way to Raven Rock on Friday evening. We stopped at Yates Place Camp in the Uwharrie National Forest on Friday night (approx. 90 minute drive), then went on to Raven Rock Saturday morning (another 90 minutes) after breakfast.

We hiked from the parking lot on the Fish Trap Trail to the Fish Traps, which are a number of rocks extending into the river that offered very good spots from which to fish. We stopped for a couple of hours of fishing and ate lunch on the rocks, then hiked back up the Fish Trap trail to the intersection with the Raven Rock loop trail. We followed the Raven Rock Loop and Little Creek Loop Trails along the river, stopping at the overlook above the river and Raven Rock itself, We then followed the Group Camp Trail to the primitive group camping area.. Some of the scouts got in a little more fishing in before dinner from the dock alongside the river near the group camp area..

On Sunday morning, we hiked back to the parking area via the Little Creek and Raven Rock trails, although since a very heavy rain storm arrived about the time we broke camp, the Little Creek Loop trail looked more like the creek itself! In total, we hiked about 4 miles on Saturday and another 2 miles on Sunday morning. Here are some pictures from our trip!
